Lee County may lack the money to buy land

There is no shortage of important environmental land for sale in Lee County. What the county does face is a shortage of money to buy that land.
The county Conservation 2020 program has spent $270 million in property taxes buying just under 21,000 acres. The program is fed by a tax of 50 cents for every $1,000 in taxable value. Voters approved the tax in a non-binding 1996 referendum and commissioners have adopted it every year since.

Still more than $15K from goal, non-profit pushes on

With just a few weeks to go, the Bonita Springs Assistance Office is short on its $100,000 goal for the annual Stocking Fund.
Lois Hollands, of the BSAO, announced last week that the total to date was $84,329.62, more than $15,000 away from the goal.
The Stocking Fund is the BSAO’s biggest fundraiser.
At the end of each year, the organization asks Bonita residents for donations to help.
Money raised from the Stocking Fund will go towards helping find food, financial assistance and advice to Bonitans facing tough times. Full story »
